Copyright and Fair Use

The writing on Instead of a Blog is copyrighted. The information about the copyright can be found in the META tag in each article's source code.

The copyright is there to prohibit anyone from taking my writing without my permission and printing it for sale or gift, or to pass the writing off as their own.

It is not there to prohibit you from grabbing my writing and sending it off in an email. In fact, I encourage any and all to do this (though not to engage in SPAM, which upsets many people). But please follow these simple rules:

  1. Always include my name with any forwarded writing by me. (Put me down as Wirkman Virkkala, by the way.)
  2. Always include the URL where you found the writing (this should begin with http and end with an shtml suffix).
  3. If you must append some nasty comment about what I've written, do me the courtesy of forwarding the quoted passage in its original context. Nabbing some phrase here or there for pillorying is not very nice.

And remember: when you forward something of mine off to someone, feel free to drop me a line, too. I'm always interested in hearing from both fans and critics.

Wirkman Virkkala

* But I can't stop you, of course.
