Dear Mr. President:
I do not trust you. I don't see how anyone with your financial history could be trusted.
But lack of trust is only the half of it: now you frighten me. Your idea of a war with Iraq is a horrendously bad idea.
Too few wars are just, and all the wars after our first have been disastrous for the American Republic. But despite this, you now say our country should war against Iraq even if no other country joins to help in the cause. And, without direct provocation from Iraq, you seek to attack it without a full declaration of war by Congress.
This is tantamount to abandoning wholly the idea that America is a republic, governed by Constitutional rules.
And it is tantamount to adopting a nakedly imperial mindset, with the American government ruling and divvying up Mesopotamia.
Further, it would encourage rather than discourage terrorism against us, fanning the flames of hatred against America amongst Muslims around the world.
I suppose you have read enough history to notice that historians often admire our war presidents most. But forget the besotted historians. Read William Graham Sumner's The Conquest of the United States by Spain,
instead. See how a republic, in winning a war, can lose its soul.
And then read the founding documents of our country again. See what you are not getting from your advisors.
And then earn my trust. Do the right thing. Don't war on Iraq. Instead, review our mid-east policy and honorably attempt to deal fairly with all nations, not just a few.
Only by making sure that America behaves justly can we put an end to terrorism. By continuing current policies (such as our long-standing two-faced umpire
work in the Levant) you merely encourage the resentments that lead to terrorism.
