Instead of a Blog

The author of this site started it at a time when he thought he couldn't bother to blog. And perhaps he was too enamored of publishing hero Benjamin R. Tucker, famed anarchist perpetrator of Instead of a Book. That's the honest truth of it. But soon he did in fact take to blogging, while continuing to produce the occasional longer essay for Instead of a Blog, reconfiguring it as a site for essays that would clog a blog. But the logic of the initial instead of had diminished.     Now, it's time to further separate the author's blog(s) from this site. The bulk of the essays currently on the site will remain, but remain as stranded, accessible mainly through Google or similar search engines. These remaining will exist, in a sense, only by grace of past external links. A number of them will be removed, however, as being of lesser importance, as too blog-like, or as simply wrong-headed. (In the latter category was an unsuccessful essay in irony, taken by both proponents and detractors as a literal thing, not as the oh-so-subtle construct intended.) In the future, a new site may emerge here, providing, perhaps, a better alternate to the stream of consciousness that is today's blogosphere.     You may note with some pleasure that the current site, now parked — but still navigable by those who really want to explore — is, once again, very much not a blog.
